I often get asked this question. Without finding out what a client wants from their outdoor space it’s difficult to answer with a specific price, but here’s my list of things to consider before engaging with the experts.
First things first, what do you want your garden to include?
When I meet a client for the first time, I discuss their desires and outcomes. I go through the list below to prompt their thoughts and help refine what is essential and what is less critical.
Why not get each member of the family involved and ask them to complete the questionnaire independently? It’s a great discussion point and you find out if there are any major differences that you need to resolve. Between you all, you will be able to map out the key elements of the garden you want.

|Clothes drier or line|
To have a garden designer create your dream garden could cost in the region of £500+ depending on the size, complexity, and the time needed to create the design. The more things you want to include the more time it is likely to take and therefore could become more expensive.
Garden designer vs Landscaper
So, what is the difference between a designer and a landscaper? In a nutshell, if you were building a house, the designer is the equivalent of the architect and the landscaper is the builder. Your architect wouldn’t physically build your house. Each role is an expert in her/his subject matter. A garden designer is trained in, and has experience with, designing and planning a garden project. Garden designers specialise in combining colours and forms to create something beautiful from your preferences and ideas to enhance your home. Landscape gardeners are the ones who get down and dirty and deal with the actual gardening. They are the ones who do the installation of your garden design. Where to start?
It can be disappointing when your wish list doesn’t match your budget but this is no reason not to start. It can work well to plan and develop your garden step by step. It means you learn what works and it helps to refine what’s really important to you. Why not start with a part of the garden, such as a border? One of the reasons I created Border in a Box was to help everyone achieve a gorgeous garden regardless of the size of their budget. A Border in a box is a great way to start and will add colour and style in your first year.
There are currently 7 Border in a Box designs to choose from: Sunny, Shady, Evergreen, Clay, Contemporary, Cottage, and Butterflies & Bees. Each design comes with:
- a garden border template that measures 3m x 1m. It can also be easily adapted to fit your garden
- a mood board containing a photo of each plant, so you can see how pretty the plants look together
- a plant list with information about each plant in the design including flowering times
- two packets of seeds so you will get pretty flowers in your first year
- plus top-tips to help you personalise your garden.
Each Border in a box costs £24.99 and is available from https://borderinabox.com/shop/
How much will the planting cost?
The border in a box designs don’t include the actual plants so here is a price guide on how much each planting plan would cost. This is just a guideline as prices, pot sizes and plant maturity vary throughout the year.
|BORDER IN A BOX DESIGN||QUANTITY OF PLANTS||COST OF PLANTS*|
|Butterflies & Bees||14||£120|
* Prices are indicative only and based on those available at the time and listed on UK websites as of 6/2/18.
There are ways you can reduce the cost. For example, you can buy less mature plants. In this photo the larger plant costs £9.99. The smaller ones cost 3 for £10 so you can buy 3 of the smaller plants (which are less mature) for the same price as the large one.

How long will it take to create the border?
Each Border in a Box is designed so that you can create a garden easily within a day. The shopping list of plants can easily be divided you can create the garden one plant at a time. You can also make it a collaborative gift and experience and divide the plant between people. The choice is yours.
If you want to make a more immediate impact then buy more mature plants.
